Cannabis Laws in British Columbia: What Adults Need to Know

A plain-language summary of the key rules for legal cannabis in BC: minimum age, possession limits, where you can consume, and the laws around driving and travel.

Cannabis has been legal for adults in Canada since October 2018, but legality comes with clear rules. British Columbia sets its own provincial rules on top of the federal Cannabis Act. Here is a plain-language summary of the ones that matter most to consumers. This is general information, not legal advice — the authoritative sources are the Government of BC and Government of Canada websites.

Minimum Age

In British Columbia, you must be 19 years of age or older to buy, possess, or consume cannabis. Retailers are required to check identification, and it is illegal to give or sell cannabis to anyone under 19.

Where You Can Buy It

Legal cannabis can only be purchased from:

  • Licensed private retailers (like Hive Cannabis) authorized by the BC Liquor and Cannabis Regulation Branch
  • BC Cannabis Stores operated by the provincial government
  • The provincial government's online store

Licensed stores sell only products from federally licensed producers. Every legal product carries an excise stamp and standardized labelling, including lab-tested THC and CBD content.

Possession Limits

Adults may possess up to 30 grams of dried cannabis (or the legal equivalent in other formats) in a public place. Different product types have defined equivalency rates — for example, 1 gram of dried cannabis is considered equivalent to 15 grams of edibles or 70 grams of liquid product. These equivalencies are printed on product packaging.

Where You Can Consume

BC generally allows cannabis consumption in private residences and on private property (subject to landlord, strata, and municipal rules). Consumption is prohibited:

  • In vehicles, whether moving or parked
  • On school properties and in areas frequented by children, such as playgrounds and sports fields
  • In many public places where tobacco smoking is also banned
  • In provincial parks except in designated areas

Municipal bylaws can add further restrictions, so check the rules where you live.

Driving

Driving while impaired by cannabis is a criminal offence. BC also enforces a zero-tolerance restriction for drivers in the Graduated Licensing Program, and police can use approved screening devices at the roadside. THC can impair judgment and reaction time for hours after consumption — the only safe approach is to not drive after consuming.

Growing at Home

Federal law permits adults to grow up to four cannabis plants per household (not per person). In BC, plants must not be visible from public spaces, and home cultivation is prohibited in homes used as licensed child care facilities. Landlords and stratas may further restrict or ban home growing.

Travel

You may transport cannabis within Canada (respecting possession limits), but taking cannabis across the Canadian border in either direction is a serious criminal offence — even when travelling to a jurisdiction where cannabis is legal.

Sharing

Adults may share (not sell) up to 30 grams with other adults 19+. Supplying cannabis to a minor is a serious criminal offence under both federal and provincial law.

The Bottom Line

The legal framework exists to keep cannabis out of the hands of young people and to ensure adults have access to regulated, tested products. If you have questions about a specific product's labelling or legal equivalency, staff at any Hive Cannabis location can walk you through the package information.
